Distribution of the type of astigmatism in relation to ages

Abstract

|
The author performed this clinical study in order to know the age dsitribution of the type and amount of astigmatism of 296 eyes in 153 children ages 3 to 15 during the period of March to October in 1998 who visited to the Department of Kyttngpook Plnational University Hospital. Total of 428 eyes in 214 children were done Atropine cycloplegic refraction. The astigmatism, over 0.5 diopters, was found in 296 eyes of total 428 eyes(62.6%) with the higher age group of 4,7,15 years. As to the type of astigmatism, with-the-rule was found in 86~, against-the-rule;l2~ and oblique; 2%. The frequency of the hyperopic, myopic and mixed astigmatism was 40~, 38% 22% respectively. The degree of astigmatism lower than 1.0 diopter was found in 150 eyes among 296, and the changes of degree of astigmatism according to age was not significant. It could be predict highly the occurrence of astigmatic amblyopia among this pediatric age group and detailed periodic ocular examination and proper management are necessary to keep the child to obtain nomal vision.
